If it's the one under the inlet plenum at the back, I've changed it without too much drama by removing the starter motor to get access Then approach from underneath. -

A heavy mesh that can't be seen through would interfere with airflow/cooling efficiency more that paint I would guess. +1 for painting cooler and mesh black, that's what I have done. Clean the cooler with some wax and grease remover, 1 coat of etch primer then a couple of light coats of matt or satin black
