  1. I had a Kenwood CD/MD unit fitted to my R33 when I bought it in 2008, it was double din, had a tilt-out front panel that powered out to the preferred angle when switched on and tilted down to allow insertion of cd/md. It also had a myriad of lighting modes and dancing equaliser bars, not a bad unit and I would have kept it if I could have played mp3's. Later upgraded to a single DIN Sony CD unit with aux socket, mp3 and bluetooth, overall much better and most of the time I just play music via the bluetooth. I also fitted an 4 channel amp and better speakers. The Kendwood was cool though, I ended up selling on E-bay to a guy who wanted the JDM look.
  2. Hi, they were Nexen N3000's, only a cheapish tyre and like I said they lasted a long time, braked well, conrnered well and were fairly quiet, but wet weather traction was poor, to the point that they throttle was like a hair trigger in the wet (had to be really careful). Now with the Dunlop Sport Maxx RTs, I can put a fair bit of boot into it wet or dry and it just grips. The Nexens were purchased when I upgraded from the stock wheel to 18X8.5 5zigen GN+ Proracer wheels, so I spent a bit more on the wheels and a bit less on the first set of tyres. The Dunlops are made in Germany so I don't mind paying $239 a piece, I also wouldnt mind spending $350 a tyre on for Bridgestone or Yokahamas, Hankooks or some other big brands, but what I object to is spending big $$$$ on a "hi-profile Brand name" and seeing it is made in China or the Phillipines; happy ot pay the $$$ if they are made in the EU (Germany,France, Italy), Japan or Korea, the other counties are just an excuse for cheap labour and to rip the customer off. Hope this makes my review clearer.
  3. Hi, I've just bought a set of Dunlop Sport Maxx RT's for my R33 GTST in 235/40X18 size. Absolutely excellent tyre, much better than the old Nexan's I bought when I got my wheels. The Nexens lasted for about 65,000k's (treadwear rating of 340) and they handled sort of ok, but were very poor for getting traction in the wet (braked well though), the Dunlops are 240 treadwear rating so don't expect to get anywhere near as many kilometres out of them, but getting some decent traction in all weather was my main aim along with being relatively quiet. I don't do any track days, so I consider these tyres to be perfect for my use and would thoroughly recommend them and at $239 each als quite affordable.
  4. I was being driven to the airport on Monday morning to catch a flight, when I heard on the radio a summary of the weekend fatalities/crashes and that how in Victoria we are 7 up on road death compared to 2011; I then saw in the space of a about 5 k's a booze/drug bus, a couple of speed detector cars and 2 separate police vehicles pulling over drivers. Clearly the extra deaths are prompting the cops to have more road presence so I'm pretty sure busts like this will be more common leading up to the end of the year. Mental note to self; ease up on right foot!
  5. Hi just completed and interstate trip in my 96 R33 GTS-T Skyline; melbourne to adelaide and return with family aboard. It was a great dirve and I'm just wondering if other Skyline owners get out on the long open road and undertake an interstate trip. We originally planned to do thr trip in my wife's VE Calais V6, we are no strangers to long distance drive having lived in 3 different states over the last 15 years, but on the night before the trip the Calais threw up a "check engine" light. I got the RACV guy to come out and he diagnosed it as a oil pressure fault (either sensor was faulty or oil pressure low) either way he advised not to drvie to adelaide and rightly so, I mean it could ahve just been the sensor but you'd look pretty stupid to undertake a drive with a check engine light on. My daughter also regailled me in a performance of the Big Bang theory episode where Sheldon lectures Penny on her cars check engine light and how Spock would not fly the enterprise in similar circumstances. Anyway, despite lack of cruise control and the smaller cabin, stiffer suspension and more intrusive exhaust noise the trip was great, you find yourselves more in touch with the drive, the lack of cruise control actually made you more involved, more aware and actually less tired/worn out from the drive; I guess all the modern features of a large car go towards insulating or indeed isolating the driver from the actual experience, in other words we get too cosy. The Skyline returned 9.6l/100km driving at around 110km/hr (or a little above!!!) for the bulk of the trip and overtaking was a breeze. I'd never really used the Skyline beyond a 250km radius trip from home before, but I'd have no hesitation in doing it again, these cars really love to stretch their legs. For those who never get out of the city in their Skylines, I strongly advise it.
  6. You're right the stock speakers are crap. A few years back upgraded my stereo with similar intentions to yourself, nothing massive and no drilling/cutting. I ended up settling on a Sony CD/mp3 with bluetooth and front aux input, 4 off 6" 4way sony speakers and a 4 channel 50w rms sony amp I did the install my self over a few weekends starting with the speakers, dead easy to install as it all lined up with stock holes, not drilling or cutting. I did have to grind away a small portion of the boss on the rear speaker covers where the "child restraint points" attach to clear the speaker though. I was immediately amased at the result by just changing the speakers. Later I fitted the amp and headunit and have ended up wiht a neat, nice sounding setup I made a custon amp shelf from some plywood, aluminium strip for brakets and utilised existing mounting points in the boot behind the rear seat. the headunit as well fitted without cutting/drilling the sony brackets that came with the unit were pre-drilled and tapped for Nissan/Toyota installation.
  7. I love it! Fantastic work. just recently rediscovered these things "classic skylines" and they look way cool.
  8. Hi, does anyone know if you can upgrade the globes on the Driving lights for an R33 series 2. I see from this thread they appear to be 55W H3's and I know that for the headlights (being plastic) you shouldn't go above the stock 55w bulbs, but does the same apply for thre driving lights? (are these lenses also plastic?)
  9. Did my 100km service in January, I had the guys at X-speed do all the work and source all the parts,..I mean they do this all the time and should know which parts work better than I do. End result, just over $1000k including parts (water pump, timing belt, filters), labour, oil, coolant and a 28 point safety check. I'm quite happy with this service and would recommend Hanson and the guys for any service or repair work to any import. I wouldn't bother getting the parts myself, they buy them in bulk and would get discounts. If you wanted a special part ask them.
  10. Hey get this, a couple of weeks ago I was heading home from work north along stock road (I work on the Kwinana strip), my boss was in front of me in a Commodore (lease car), we were both doing about 90ish in a 80 zone, no other cars on the road, he was pulling away from me when I saw the cop with his speed gun, he waved my boss in then waved me in, went up to my boss and told him to be on his way as he was after the skyline. Cop came over to me and went through the usual, give us your license etc, he let me off with a warning, thankfully! But can you imagine the next morning,,...went straight to my bosses office and said "Yeah pick on the Skyline driver!!!"
  11. Here's my effort, being a bit of an older fart (41) I'm not so much into the Doof-Doof, but wanted a good strong sound (still play it loud and love to rock), stock look and no loss of boot space. Did all the work myself, just completed last weekend, really satisfying doing it your own way and getting the detail right rather than have someone do a butch job and charging $300. Really happy with the end result. Headunit: Sony MEX-BT2600 cd/mp3, aux input, Bluetooth Front & Rear speakers: Sony 6.5" 4 way speakers GTX 1640 70Watts rated Amp: Sony XM4S Small footprint 4 * 50Watt RMS Wiring: Sony 4 gauge power wire c/w 16 gauge speaker wire and RCA cables Speakers fitted in with virtually no mods, just busted off a small plastic post on the stock nissan speaker surrounds, althoug I had to grind off a fair bit on the underside of the seatbelt anchor bosses which cover the rear speakers as they would have fouled. Made up the amp bracket out of some 12mm plywood (dont use MDF as it's just compressed cardboard= crap) and so it wouldn't look loke a timber shelf, I covered it with some Fake Carbon fibre contact, looks cool. Headunit basically dropped in,...Sony have the headunit drilled and tapped for standard mounts in late model Toyotas and Nissans so factory bracket and Nissan DIN pocket just screwed in, wiring was fairly straight forward, found great advice on all the Do's and Don'ts on the Web.
  12. Don't know about the 3600, but I just installed the model down from it ie the Sony MEX-BT2600 basically the same unit without the USB, $229 from strathfield, hooked it up to a 4*50watt rms sony amp and 4 * 6.5" 4 way Sony speakers,...sounds awesome. Music input choices are CD/mps disc, aux input for mp3 player or Bluetooth audio streaming, ie use your phone as a mp3 player that is wirelessly connected to you head unit,....fantastic,...also works as handsfree phone. I too looked at the 3600 thinking the USB could be useful but for $349, couldn't justify
  13. Got my R33 done at Tint-a-Car; darkest legal tint is dark but their Bolle tint (like the sunglasses) although slightly ligher offers more UV and heat reflection, hence interior is noticably cooler,...this is really important if your car sits in the sun all day while at work. Tint-a-Car are also very professional in their work, I would highly recommend.
  14. Sorry forgot to mention Just Car premium of $750 is full comprehensive
  15. Only had my Skyline S2 R33 GTST for the last 15months, first year had if insured with Famous for $732 When renewal came this year the bastard jacked up the premium to $1140 I am an "old fart" of 41 with a pretty clean driving record and no claims in the last 7 years...(2001 hit a Roo in my Commodore 50k's outside Kal); so I thought WTF and jumped on SAU to search for an alternative,...some posts mentioned "Just Car", hopped on thier website filled in the online form including all mods quote came in @ $750 Rang Famous to give them one last chance,...they couldn't car less.....So now I am with Just Car....thanks SAU
