Lowered Gearbox(Z32 Conversion) 15Mm Will 2Pc Shaft Still Be Ok?

Recommended Posts

Hey, to fit a z32 gearbox to my r32 to clear the tunnel from the top of the box I had to lower it 15mm. Will a 2 pc shaft be able to handle this difference in angle for a high hp car? Cheers

You can't just lower the gearbox rear mount or the line of the universals won't be parallel.

Sometimes a CV style joint can cope with misalignment where the same setup using standard universal joints would vibrate terribly.

(I presume the joint on the gearbox is a universal)

Suggest you chat with a driveline specialist.

If you need to lower the gearbox mount you'd be advised to look at lowering the engine mounts as much as you can too. and then probably looking at the height of the centre bearing mount also. That way you minimise the angle in the first place, then mitigate its effect by spreading it between both ends of the tailshaft.

That said....how is this necessary? The VG gearbox is the same basic box as the RB25DET box. I (and many other peeps) have RB25DET box in R32 without problems. Are you transplanting a VG30 into your car? If you are, have you considered giving yourself an uppercut?

I've got a vh41de sitting in there using a 300zx box. the motor is as low as it can sit. I would have thought it would clear the tunnel easily as I did have a 25 motor and box in it before. They are similar but different casings as the shifter setup is different

    • found this on the forum , suggests I am in the range  ----------------------------- From the segmented (potentially incorrect) information I've found that;  Early R32: RB26000XXXX to RB26002XXXX  Mid R32: RB26003XXXX (V-Spec I RB26-03XXXXX - Reference Classic Register) Late R32: RB26004XXXX (V-Spec II RB26-042XXXX - RB26-045XXXX - Reference Classic Register) Early R33: RB26005XXXX Mid R33: RB26006XXXX (as per the engine in this R32 V-Spec II, which is what I'm concerned about from legitimacy perspective) Late R33:  RB26007XXXX Early R34 (2000+):  RB26008XXXX ----------------------
    • Now as I understand it the engine numbers are sequential for the rb26.  EG stamped - RB26040100A is a 40,100 engine.    Now they made between 1988 and 1994 43,834 R32 GTR's  In 1994 they made 7,464 r32 gtr's.  So if you have a ~37,000++ number RB26 it's "safe" ish to assume its an 1994 motor and a long nose crank ?    The long nose crank being introduced somewhere in Feb of 1993.

    • what exhaust, intercooler, turbine housing? I don't get this part ngk 7’s spark plugs (tuner refused to tune with 8’s for my car) why is the keyboard operator telling you what parts go in your car comes of as controlling, controls your engine, your tune, your horsepower.
    • Looks good man, at this rate everyone will have running cars before me lol.
