Shut Down While Driving

This morning after dropping my daughter off at school I was driving at 50kmh on a flat road and the car just died, dash lights off, engine stopped. I rolled to a stop, turned the ignition off and then just started it again like nothing had happened. What the heck?

This would not be good going down a steep hill, brakes are crap without the engine running. Any ideas, What could this be.

Cheers Harry

I had a similar issue with my M35. In my situation it ended up being a poorly wired immobiliser. However it could be a range of things

- Dirty or broken AFM (this was most commonly suggested to me, try cleaning, replacing or disconnecting it)

- PCV valve

- Dead crank angle sensor

- Dead fuel pump

There are probably more but those are the things I went through when mind did something similar haha. Good luck!

If the dash lights went off then I would suspect a relay or power module fault, or perhaps a battery/terminal issue

Commonly in wet conditions the IPDM module behind the battery gets saturated as the bung in the bottom blocks, filling the battery compartment with water. I usually just pop the bung out so it drains better. You can test it by flooding the hose down there and seeing if it drains.

  • 2 weeks later...

My turbo timer had poor wiring and burnt out my ignition barrel, had the same affect. Prior to burning out my ignition barrel, it would randomly shut off completely.

Any luck finding the cause?
