Yep they've had two airbags since the series II R33 in 1996 and optional side bags in the R34 since '99 I believe.

Was good that the article at least went some way to talking about the qualities of the R34 as a tuner car. It also mentioned that the 34 can still be a challenge and won't do everything for you, which, to Kristian's point, is kind of a big drawcard for many people here on this forum.
