1984 Skyline R30 Manual

hello everyone,

the name's sam, im an international student here in melbourne currently in final year of my study, also employed full-time

i recently went car-hunting when i came across this epic 1984 skyline TI hatch l24e; 141000 km's on the clock, auto all electrics and aircon in working order. HOWEVER, i am in need of some specialty help :)

the car is leaking fuel at one of the injectors. it is not a massive leak, but i surmise it is something that only gets bigger and bigger - need to put a lid on it! for this and many other prospective reasons, i was wondering if anybody had the repair/service manual for the r30 l24e for sale/any tips on where i can get one for a good price? (search keywords for ebay/amazon/google/etc.??) any tips on injector repairs/replacement/cleaning etc? (maybe its just blocked but i cannot be certain myself)

this is also one of my first posts so please be gentle. i am also operating on a ridiculously short budget (int'l student) so any help at all will be great! very amateur with cars but i have the learning capacity.

Welcome aboard Sam, If you stick with it you will have yourself an excellent piece of Japanese motor engineering.

In the quick time, you are very likely to find the service manual at a Library.

Once the injectors start leaking, they are virtually a throw away item, as to dismantle and repair is a specialist job & very expensive.

You will most certainly find examples of your car in some motor wreckers (Auto Parts Recyclers) in Melbourne and a 2nd hand injector will probably sort out your problem. It would be best to take a set (6) in case some of these leak as well. A day at the wreckers is a great learning platform, as your dismantling the parts to get to the injectors without touching your own car, sort of like a trial run. Be careful with the seals when dismantling the car or cars as these are just as important as the injector itself. If you go to a wrecker, look at the bakelite insulator the injector is sitting in, as these are often cracked and broken & good 2ndhand ones are hard to find and you will find most L series 6's have broken insulators somewhere.

Cleaning the injectors properly is going to cost you about $35.00 each, at an injection specialist or auto electrician, so it might be a good idea to buy yourself a new set. You can find these on Ebay.com (thats the USA ebay) for about $200.00 set.

Cars are just a big mechano set, you take them apart and put them back together the same way and you rarely go wrong, but the trick is putting them back the same way.

@Michael: my understanding is that the 280z l28e engine has injectors with a higher flow rate, compatible but i am not sure as to wiring/programming implications.

What would be the title for a service/repair manual for the l24e engine (or mr30 skyline, preferably)? quick search of ebay might help me hehe

Anyone aware of the name/title of the injectors found in the l24e engine? i believe the stock ones are green, but again i am not sure as i am without point of reference.

Hi,

The service manual title 'Nissan Skyline Model R30 Series Service Manual'. Quite expensive new (eg at http://www.pitstop.net.au/) but they do turn up on eBay sometimes.

Have you checked the hose clamps on the injectors to make sure they're all tight? The car hasn't done that many km's so maybe it's something simple.

Also, just wondering.... what colour is your R30 hatch and where did you find it? I've seen a few on eBay recently, none of them got to the reserve price.

The L28e & L24e use identical injectors. It's the L28et (turbo) that has larger injectors. The injection systems are very nearly identical.

Do as John suggested, check all the hose clips are tight, unless of coarse you can see where the injector is leaking from, but if it is possibly a hose clip loose, problem can be solved easily and quickly.

Hopefully you guys can see the link..if not, she's a Golden colour (dried maple leaves or maples syrup comes to mind lol). picked her up for $770.00 no reg no rwc (reg expired dec10). I have replaced the tyres for RWC purposes..the rest looks very clean inside out. I have not had a chance for a closer inspection since im a slave to the system, this weekend is gonna be busy hahaha. I will keep in mind re: hose clamps.

the other issue is the oil sensor - there seems to be a minor oil leak around the seal and as such, the sensor is a dud and does not display a reading on the dash...could just be a clogged sensor (what a wonderful day it would be if both the injector and oil sensor were just clogged ^_^) any ideas on where i can score a replacement oil sensor for the l24e? compatible choices??

gentlemen (and ladies), i have posted maybe a couple of times. the amount of info provided has easily surpassed my expectations. thank you all it is very kind.

hopefully it is just a hose clamp - car had been sitting idle for a few months prior to purchase - perhaps some moisture got in the fuel and clogged the injector? regardless, i will not discard replacing the injectors - time to search for compatible injectors!

questions re: mileage - has anybody ever pulled a grandma on an entire tank of petrol in an r30 l24e? how did u go? there should be some discrepancy between auto and manual..but immaterial.

if anybody has any info on 2nd hand copy of the manual + the supplement + oil sensor + injectors-- willing to pay a reasonable price! please pm me or email or whatever! and thank you all.

The car looks good. Whereabouts in Melbourne are you? Last time I checked (a few weeks ago) there were some R30's at Imlach's in Centre Rd Springvale.

Yours is 4 speed auto I presume, official figures are 13.5L/100km city and 8.5L/100km highway. (3 speed figures are 14 and 10.5.)

you are correct, 4 speed auto overdrive and the figures are the same ones i found scouring online..wanted to see what the variations are like..no matter i am certain the engine is in fair enough condition to pull the mileage -- ESPECIALLY after i fix the injectors!

I am in Maidstone - bit of a hike to springvale but it had to be done! the only issue would be pulling a part that actually works/in good knick. i will call around to enquire with other wreckers (pref something nearer) see how we go.

It looks like you have a great Ti which is the very top of the tree in Australian delivered cars and for a long time now, have been considered the best ever Skyline by those that sold them new.

Your oil pressure switch is best sourced from a wrecker, as Nissan want about $180.00 for it. After market ones are available from Repco or Bursons or some other reputable parts supplier, BUT they have diferent connections and therefore have to be modified to suit. Try the wreckers first, because 2ndhand will cost you about $5.00, so grab a few that look like they don't leak and take the wires with them, as you might want to modify an after market unit somewhere along the way.

I was wondering what other vehicles besides the Holden VL and l28e had direct swap injectors? open up my options when i head down to the wreckers on saturday :D

Sam,

You might do better with VL Dunnydores as opposed to L28e/280ZX/280C options. Firstly, there is by far more of them and the likelyhood of a good seconhand set more likely. The R31 Skyline had the same injectors, or more importantly, the VL had the same injectors as the R31.

If you're going to the wreckers tomorrow, ANY L24e MR30 Skyline Ti (like your own) will have the oil pressure switch you're looking for. The poverty packs as I refer to them, the basic S models only ever had an oil pressure light & the sender is entirely diferent.

When you're getting injectors, take a full set if you can afford them. If out of an R30 Skyline, be sure to take the painted ferrules under the hose, because they are invalueable and much better than a screw clip, they will be a pain to get the hose out of but well worth it. I'm unsure of the R31 & VL injectors, wether they have the ferrule or utilise another clip instead, but to get at the R31 & VL injectors, you're going to have to dismantle the inlet manifold (take the top off)

hey buddy, clean wagon,

oil pressure switch needs to be a 2 pin, if u carnt get a r30 1 (pricey) try a rb25 switch, i picked 1 up 4 $20 2nd hand, works the light and the gauge fine,

ne way my 2cents, good luck with it

picked up an original injector (green) from a mate and currently in the midst of sourcing a manual and oil pressure sensor/sender, however, car is at mechanics for injector reconditioning and RWC. you guys have been very informative and it is highly appreciated. thank you very much.
