R33 Gtst Smic Upgrade To R34 Smic - Results (video & Pics)

Hey Guys, thought to share this with you... i just installed an R34 GTT SMIC onto my R33 GTST and boosted to 10psi + ECU Reset

Current Mods: 3" Split dump + 5" S/Steel CAT + 3" CAT back exhaust + Turbotech

Results: Car comes onto boost MUCH smoother & revs to redline MUCH easier.. there has been a HUGE increase in pull through out the rev range especially in 1st and 2nd gear... Dyno would be nice, any one offering a free dyno pass? lol

Recommendation: Definitely worth the upgrade if you have stock turbo... Proior to this upgrade, the car felt held back and restricted, now the car feels much freer and has noticably unleashed more power... Throws you right back in the seat

Note: Prior to the SMIC installation, i flushed it with degreaser/hot soapy water and i couldn't believe the amount of black crap that came out! had to reflush about 4 times before it was 100% clean... then ran warm water though to get rid of the soap/chemical residue... i then stuck an old hair dryer in one end and let it sit there for 30min untill it was drip dry.. worked a treat!

Look at the size difference between R33 SMIC Vs R34 SMIC!

Here is a couple short videos while driving home tonight, its just to show the smoothness of boost and ease of rev... (excuse the bad footage due to holding my phone while recording and driving) Hope you like!

OH good work! I've already put the 34GTT cooler in, and the turbotech controller... Got all the exhaust parts, but haven't fitted them.

When that's done, i'll shove it up to 10psi... same as you have. Hopefully it'll feel the same!

Can't play vids though =-/

I wonder if a change from a R34 SMIC on a GTT to a FMIC will show the same benefits

No, you will not mate the R33 and R34 turbos are much the same except for a slightly larger exhaust housing on the R34. So unless you upgrading your turbo keep the stock GTT cooler. Its a good unit and you wont loose any throttle response to that of a large frontmount.

always good to see these cheep mods work.

cheers

I was thinking of doing this upgrade but thought if i do end up wanting bigger power i wouldnt want to do another upgrade to fmic. so im just going to get a big fmic, but good luck with your mods!!

Hey Guys, the video's were recorded in mp4 format and wouldn't upload onto SAU i had to change the file extension to .mpg for it to work... if you guys try and open it into real player they will work.. or download any divx codec pack and will work in windows media player...

Just a reply to Nismo God, i am planning for big power in the future, however until i am financially ready for a larger turbo + rebuild + injectors + fuel pump .etc. the R34 SMIC upgrade will give you the full potential out of the stock turbo and setup... these SMIC's have been known to hold anything up to 14psi and 200 - 230rw/kw which is more then the stock turbo, injectors and fuel pump will ever handle... so in my opinion, full exhaust + boost control + R34 SMIC + PFC will give you the maximum and most reliable tuned power out of a stockish R33... and wont break the bank.. Not to mention will not give you any issues with the boys in blue as a FMIC would :whistling:

Cheers,

Sarkis

Did not realise there was such a difference in model SMIC's!

You could probably put a thermo fan on the front as well to get a bit more from it as the airflow in there could be a bit restricted. Maybe a water sprayer as well just to complete the efficiency of it all.

Yep i got a full 3"... Split dump ----> 5" s/steel CAT ----> 3" cat back ------> resonator half way ------> 6" Cannon

I love the sound... its just perfect, not too loud and just enough growl to turn heads and let alarms off heheh it was built for performance not noise... 21rw/kw gain on stock boost nothing else was touched....

I used the R34 SMIC Shroud as induction... had to slightly modify it to fit behind the S2 R33 front bar... After a hard thrash (30 min driving) the turbo side of the SMIC was hot and the manifold side was warm/cool... the stock R33 SMIC was all hot after a thrash... made quite a difference...

You can actually hear the car rev out real easily in the video and see how it pulls in mid range... I can feel the difference when driving...

Hahaha Cubes, i eased it to 4000RPM then gave it a hit... same as the other video... She goes real well compared to many other R33's and R34's that i have raced, some with more mods then mine (EBC, PFC, FMIC) :verymad: hehe

Cheers

    • New R34 owned here (from the US) and found a gem, '98 GTT with ~6k miles, super clean & completely stock. When shifting there's no grinding, shifts smooth, etc. The concern I have are 2 things: 1) Only in 2nd and 3rd... when maintaining a slower speed (in traffic as an example) as I let off/on the gas, the shifter will slightly move and vibrate. If the clutch is engaged, none of this happens. It's not bad, but enough to feel like something isn't necessarily right. 2) This mainly happen in 4th or 5th... the shifter slightly bounces up and down, almost like it's riding on unbalanced tires (and I do think the tires are unbalanced as I get a little of that bounce feel at higher speeds, which is maybe why it only happens in 4th/5th). Lastly, and sorry for this noob question but I want to work on this car myself, can someone teach me some on these manual transmissions? Like servicing them, best products to use, etc.; would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
    • Coilovers aren't even the first step. Bushes, subframe position and alignment, HICAS elimination, adjustable upper arms and traction arms in order to dial out understeer. All these things need/deserve attention first. ARBs (There's no such thing as a swaybar. Please, everybody, stop calling them that) are useful if you want to limit spring stiffness. Otherwise you can control body roll with springs. Spring and damper rates are a function of road surface, speed and usage. There is no solution that works for all cases.
    • Define "nothing". Is the starter spinning but not the engine? Engine turning but not firing? If the engine is turning but not firing, then you are missing either fuel or spark. You need to find whichever has gone missing.
    • Shitbox Tiguan updates, got the APR OTS tune put back on (no charge for it to be removed/added back), didn't want to just come in just for that (not a fan of wasting people's time for nothing) so I purchased an APR dog bone insert. The boys at German Performance Garage said they would fit it for free too since they had 1x hoist free. Now that's service you don't normally get from most workshops. Anyhow, tune back on, snow grate pulled out, dog bone insert back in and not going to lie, a few smiles when I nailed it around the industrial area heading back onto the M7. Amayama also said 1 to 2.5 month wait for the RB25DE heater hose, yeah why not, car has been off the road for nearly 3, what's a other 2.5?
    • Hmm I'm going to approach this from the other side... What is the car doing that you don't like or what would you like the car to do that is currently isn't doing (handling wise that is)
