Got Dynoed! S2 Rwd

So i got my car tuned today with these 'mods':

Apexi SAFC2

Apexi SITC

Greddy Profec B S2

3" exhaust dump pipe back

Filter

BOV

Came back with 169.8rwkw. Not sure whether to be pleased or not. I think its okay. Perhaps a FMIC would net a bit of gain.

Tune seems to be rather safe at around 11.5 A/F ratios on 11ish psi boost.

It feels wierd to drive, seems to have a fair bit of the original dip at 4500-5000rpm, maybe its just the fact that power picks up quite sharply after 5500rpm.

Heres the printout for ya, a bit nasty as its a phone camera shot. Red is original/base tune at 6.5 psi peak, Blue is final tune.

Boost seems to fall off after 5500rpm, so highflow turbo/front mount may be the next items on the agenda.

Damn money pits these cars!

170 rwkw from an exhaust, boost up and piggy back tune is pretty damn good. I can't read the graph all that well, a decent scan would be nice. In particular would like a closer look at the boost and A/F ratios graphs.

Is the exhaust turbo back? If so, is it split dump? High flow cat?

Want to share the SITC settings? I will be interesting to compare the S2 with an S1.

hey. Ill try and get a better scan some time. the AF on the final tune is aroun 11.5 and goes down to 11 at just over 5500 rpm.

Boost is on the 11psi line to give you an idea.

My SITC settings are:

0, +2, -2, -1, -1

SAFC are:

4000: +2

4500: +2

5000: -3

5500: -6

6000: -10

6500: -14

Mind sharing yours as well. Id be very keen to know.

It appears the AF ratio is now safer than before below 5000rpm.

Exhaust is 3" dump pipe back with not cat, 2x resonators and a semi straight through muffler.

I don't have an SAFC, I am using a DFA, so unfortunately those setting don't correspond. I have as flat an A/F ratio as I can manage at 12.0 to 1 from 3,000 rpm to 7,200 rpm. I made sure it was never leaner than 12 to 1, so it hasa couple of spots where it gets into the high 11’s. But that the compromise you make when using a piggy back.

On the SITC I am running;

800rpm = 0

2,400rpm = +5

4,000rpm = -1

5,600rpm = -8

7,200 rpm = -12

So it looks like I have a fair bit more aggression in the ignition timing. I am using Shell V Power Racing 100 ron, which might be why I can run a bit more advance. I have tuned it using a set of bionic ears and listening for knock.

I have been road tuning it so far, so I haven’t had it on the dyno. I will do that once I have fitted the last mod, which is a Performance Metalcraft split dump engine pipe combo.

I do have a very lightly used GCG Ball Bearing high flow on the shelf that I was going to put on, but I like the low down torque that it now has. It is very useful when towing the R32GTST, which, after all, is what the Stagea is supposed to be used for. So I might keep the standard turbo on until it gets ceramic in the cat disease.

On your no power problem at 4,500 rpm, I am surprised that the SAFC is set at +2. That means the ECU is seeing more than normal airflow (ie; higher voltage). So you have actual higher airflow from the higher boost and lower restrictions (exhaust, filter etc) and then the SAFC is adding to that. The ECU should be jumping to R&R mapping, which would explain the loss of power.

Once you start lowering the AFM voltage (that the ECU sees) from 5,000 rpm onwards, the ECU is far less likely to jump to R&R mapping. More voltage correction from the SAFC as the rpm rises means you get further and further away from the trigger.

I have found that the 4,000 rpm to 5,500 rpm range is always the hardest to tune using piggy backs. It is where the most compromises have to be made in the A/F ratios and ignition tuning. Under and over that range is far simpler in comparison.

PS; if you want to test this out yourself, try changing the SAFC setting at 4,500 rpm to 0 or even -2. Then do a quick run and see if the power loss is still as severe. I wouldn't leave it there, but a couple of short test runs won't hurt. Then you will know what direction to head in when you talk to the dyno tuner.

How do I get my safc settings? Played with it a little but not sure what Im doing :D

just monitor 4channel, and use throttle to see the different rpm figures?

If I remember rightly, you're not running a standard turbo. So I wouldn't expect the ignition timing to be same.

Hey SK would you mind posting you DFA maps if you have a second? It would be an awesome reference.

I too was quite suprised to see more air dialed in at 4-4.5k. I was running around on my road tune with about -6 set on the safc at these rpm and it felt MUCH better. I did hear a bit of det with anything higher than 0 on the timing with this setting though so i guess it may be getting quite borderline.

I haqve already changed the settings that the tuner gave to:

I think i will dial back 4500 and 4000 a bit more in the coming days and put my good ears on to see how it goes. I may also throw it on another dyno if a dyno day comes around.

Kinda annoyed that i spent $340 and still had the monster boooobaaa R&R thing happening.

To check your safc settings hit the back button until you reach the main menu where you can select monitor/settings/etc. Select settings then select Hi-throttle. Then just browse over the different points to see what the settings are.

Now when im rich i think ill go for a highflow, split dump and FMIC.

Heres a question.

My stock ECU takes 13-15psi without hitting R&R, but some of my friends said theyve heard a bit of pinging when on full boost/high load (140km/h etc etc)

When I check my injector duty on my IEBC, it doesnt go over 54-55 out of 64, the question is, if my injectors arnt maxing out (which I assume is load point 64) can I still get heavy knocking with a stock ECU?

Nah, thats the settings from the 160awkw @ 12psi tune on the standard turbo.

Only changed to the highflow mid last week, and wont be getting a tune for another month at least.

Umm, by memory boost didnt trail off for my Stagea (using a dual stage Hybrid EBC) .... although I never had much time over 5000rpm (never saw the point), however the RPM rise thru to redline was reasonably fast.

Now with the highflow turbo on (untuned) I still havent noticed any boost drop but I have noticed that the RPM ramps up from 4000 - past 6500 very very quickly.

I got 170rwkw (awd stagea on 2wd dyno) at 9psi (cheap manual boost controller jumps up to 11psi and slowly works back to 9psi at the top end).

Mods:

- 3" turbo-back exhaust (incl 3" hi-flow cat and 2 straight thru magnaflow mufflers)

- gt30 turbo

- safc

- manual boost controller

- apexi panel air filter

There was no dip in power at all on mine, and the revs do build very fast right from the get-go...just gets faster and faster as the turbo comes into its "sweet spot" above 4000rpm...

Definitely needs more boost and the turbo will handle it fine, I just need to save for a sitc and upgraded fuel system bits and a good tune, and probably a good EBC while I'm at it.

I reckon I could squeeze a bit more out of it in its current state (not sure if my manual boost controller is set up correctly) but not worth the money for another tune.

    • no, the car was a manual 5 speed from the factory and still is.
    • While going through data logs late last week, I spotted a small issue with my WMI. My WMI starts to progressively inject at 11psi of boost. I'm using a 25psi cut in pressure switch on my WMI as an added safety and if the curve is linear, I should hit that 25psi on my WMI system around 13-14psi of boost.  As per my data logs, my WMI pressure switch only activates around 19psi of boost. This is causing my non WMI 4D map to trim for WMI. I'm presuming this is caused by the mechanical switch response time, injection curve not being linear or both.  I ordered a 2-10psi adjustable cut in pressure switch which should correct this. If this doesn't resolve it before my dyno appointment on Friday, I'll just remove the pressure switch temporarily and more than likely replace it with a pressure transmitter afterwards.    BTW Speedtek has yet to refund me.
    • Yep PETG (Polyethylene terephthalate glycol), my 'go to' plastic, printed to precisely how long I wanted 🙂, about a finger length ha ha. I would usually grind up something but since I've got the printer I thought I might give it a try and it worked beautifully ^_^b So with regards to torque, there's a little bit of science behind the orientation of the print, fill density, fill pattern and number of external perimeters which can increase the strength dramatically, but you still need to work within the constraints of the material and the orientation of the model for sure. I certainly wouldn't be making a breaker bar out of plastic, but this little bugger is very strong for it's size that's for sure.
