I am planning to buy a GTi-R to beat around on in the winter up here in Canada. My question is, if I put a torque split controller in to run full time AWD, will this wear out my clutch pack in the transfer case? Also, will just driving it in regular operation do the same? I've been told that they are only really meant for quick bursts of power to the front wheels, and by running it in full time AWD it will cause problems.

The GTi-R has the same Attessa system as the GTR, incase you were wondering.

NO,

the gti-r can not run any more than its stock 50/50

it is not the same system as a gtr..

you could however buy a special center diff that may split 40/60.. i do recall something about these when i owned a gti-r

but trust me when i say the torque can not be split between the front rear etc etc..

If the Gti-r system was similar to the Gtr, i wouldn't have sold my under steering pig to get what i have today..

Uhh, GTi-R's run the same Attessa ETS that the GTR has. Some components are different but it is essentially the same system.

I drive my friends GTR all the time at the track, and you are saying they don't under steer? hhaha, riiiiight. GTRs are pigs, even with Teins and fully ajustable suspension running on semi-slicks his car understeers. And it's certianly not from a bad suspension setup.

Anyways, all I want to do is run the gti-r 50/50 for when there is loads of snow out.

GTR's don't HAVE to be "understeering pigs" as you put it, one of these should go a long way to fixing the problems in both cars

The GTI-R is a constant 4wd 50/50 car, it does NOT vairy the split between front and rear at all.

The GTI-R does not have the same 4wd system as the GTR, it may share a similar name but they are so unrelated!

the GTI-R uses a center diff which is not variable, and can not be adjusted to split torque, only a worn/broken diff will cause the gti-r to be more rwd

The GTR uses a transfer case with clutches belts whistles etc to split torque between front rear and is controlled electronically and can be varied with controllers

And thats all folks!!! Trust me i have owned both, and pulled apart both!!

Well, sorry but you are still wrong. You may have owned a car that had an a/m center diff in it. Why does it have a torque split guage just like the GTR?

I've done my research.

But your just getting information off other clueless dickheads with clearly NO idea,

How about you look at the gtir's system mechanically. it does not have anything inside the mechanics that will give it any more than a 50/50 split.

there are no clutch pack transfer cases like the GTR

no clutch packs or gtr transfer case fitting in there

If your still under some delusion that you can torque split your gti-r than go ahead.

and good luck to you

THE GTR/GTI-R SYSTEMS SHARE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN COMMON

research a bit harder then buddy.

GTI-R DOES NOT HAVE A TORQUE SPLIT GAUGE. so I don't know where you get that from. having owned and driven many of them I can assure you of that fact.

GTI-R AWD system has ZERO in common with a GTR system except for the name.

GTI-R is a FWD platform, east-west mounted engine. with AWD added.

The front diff is in the gearbox, and then a centre diff sends drive to the rear. there is no wet clutch transfer case like a GTR.

It is permanently 50/50 torque split. there is no electronic control and cannot be.

GTI-R are a great little car but their AWD system is nothing like a GTR. not even similar.

but hey, why listen to us. I say run out there, buy your torque split controller and then post up some vids of you using it. that should be awesome.

Some people hey haha.

there are the facts from two owners of both gti-r and gtr's

and i figure we both made the change as we wanted cars that steered into corners well tongue.gif

hell if the gti-r had a split system like the gtr i wouldnt have sold my tomei built gti-r motor/car and upgraded to a gtr....

Do some more research, here is a hint as well.

Not everyone that sounds clever on forums actually knows what they are dribbling sh1t on, some people might sound intellectual because they know the terminology, use long words with more than 4 syllables, and seem to have a high post count.

Something else to remember, just because someone has a high post-count doesn't mean anything they have posted is worth reading, it just means they have been tapping away at the keyboard to long.

Post count doesn't equal truth, fact, or quality.

MY other question with this thread is at the start your asking about the system, but at the end, telling everyone you know all about it.

If you have done all this research and know your shit (and trust that your information is factual from the people you have it from), then why bother asking the engineers and mechanics that HAVE worked on both systems in here.

I love these people that come onto a forum to ask a question they think they already know the answer to, only to try and crush people when they reply with information that doesn't match your 'researched' info.

Correct me if im wrong here but you cant have constant 50/50 split without some sort of slipperage or else the diffs/gearbox will wind up and go boom !

does a gtir run a viscous or something similar like the subapoos?

i cant make shit out of the exploded view,

cheers.

yeah pretty sure its a viscous

here is info from the gti-r forum that i frequent

What is the torque split for the 4WD system?
50/50

What sort of diffs does it have?
- Front diff (inside the transfer case) is an OPEN type (except for the RB models) [Ratio = 0.270]
- Centre diff (inside the gearbox) is a Viscous LSD type [Ratio = 4.125 = Final Drive]
- Rear diff is a Viscous LSD type [Ratio = 3.7]

that should clear some things up smile.gif
