Teen break-up sparked US family slaying

A 16-year-old girl has been charged with murdering three members of her family in Texas, after her parents ordered her to break up with her boyfriend.

The high school student, who cannot be named, faces three counts of murder, along with her 19-year-old boyfriend and two others, aged 18 and 20.

The girl's mother and two younger brothers were found shot and stabbed to death at the family's secluded home, following a pre-dawn ambush on Saturday, investigators said.

Her father was shot five times but despite his horrific injuries managed to crawl 300 metres to a neighbour's home. He is in hospital, and a neighbour said his condition was improving.

The teen's boyfriend Charlie James Wilkinson has told police that his girlfriend wanted her parents dead because they forbade their relationship.

"Wilkinson stated that he and (the girl) were in love and the only way they could be together is to kill the parents," arrest documents said.

The girl, Wilkinson, Charles Allen Waid, 20, and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, were being held on $US1.5 million ($A1.6 million) bond.

It's alleged the girl and Wilkinson spent a month planning the killings.

The arrest documents say Waid - a friend of Wilkinson's - was offered about $US2,000 ($A2,100) to join the plot, but do not say who made the offer.

Wilkinson and Waid broke into the house around 4am on Saturday and fired on the parents while they slept, the documents say.

The two then went upstairs and fatally shot Mathew Caffey, 13, and stabbed Tyler Caffey, 8, with a sword.

Wilkinson and Waid took cash and jewellery, then set fire to the home to try to cover up the killings before leaving with the teenage girl and Johnson, who were waiting in a car parked down the road, the documents say.

Investigators said Wilkinson had told them that he and his girlfriend had then "had sex and slept".

The slayings have rocked the family's community of Emory, about 100km northeast of Dallas.
